How Are We Organized?
Sons Sweden Association is a self-governing organization. We operate as a decentralized association, with the Annual Meeting serving as our highest decision-making body. The role of the board is to coordinate activities on a national level, organize events for the entire country, maintain international relations with sister organizations, and oversee the association's finances and operations.
To fulfill these responsibilities, the board is supported by several officials who are delegated tasks of common interest for all Sons chapters within the EU. The central hub for these activities is our website, which serves as a platform for communication among members. Sons Sweden does not have a fixed meeting venue; instead, we gather at various meet-ups and rallies. Most of our activities are held within our regional chapters.
Each region is led by a Regional Manager (RC), appointed by the board. The RC is responsible for coordinating and initiating activities within their designated region. Given the scope of these responsibilities, RCs often appoint District Managers (Contact Persons) to assist. These officials ensure the association hosts rides, meet-ups, and events, which are detailed in our activity plan. Additionally, spontaneous rides and gatherings are organized throughout the year, with invitations shared through our website.
Why Is It Incorrect to Call Sons an MC Club?
In Sweden, there is little formal distinction between a club and a non-profit association; the terms are often considered synonymous. However, in the motorcycle subculture, both nationally and internationally, it is important to distinguish that we are a branded association rather than a club. This distinction is significant and deliberate.
Internationally, there are at least two organizational models in the motorcycle world:
-
MC Clubs: These are usually smaller, close-knit groups of riders. Membership is highly exclusive, often requiring a probationary period during which prospective members are assessed. During this time, they are not allowed to wear the club’s back patch. Only after members determine that the candidate has met the club's standards is full membership granted. MC clubs typically use a three-piece back patch, and this influences how insignias should be displayed.
-
Associations: These are generally larger organizations, such as branded associations, which function differently from clubs. Membership is open to anyone who meets the association’s criteria and shares its values. The English term "association" translates directly to "förening" in Swedish.
Sons Association aligns with the latter model. Based on this distinction, our board decided to emphasize that Sons Sweden is an association, not a club. Sons Sweden welcomes all motorcycle riders who share our values and meet our membership requirements.
